New York City Museum Recognizes U.S. Jews Who Helped Refugees During WWII

An exhibition opened this month at a museum in Lower Manhattan about efforts by American Jews to bring refugees to the US from Europe during the Nazi era.

The exhibition, "Against All Odds: American Jews and the Rescue of Europe's Refugees, 1933-41" will be on view for a year at the Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, located on Battery Place.

Jewish Groups Condemn Norwegian Newspaper Cartoon

The European Jewish Congress (EJC) is carefully considering the possibility of taking legal action over a cartoon in Dagbladet, one of Norway’s leading papers, which it says depicts circumcision in a bloodthirsty-demonic manner.

“This cartoon has crossed all lines of decency and is dripping with hate and anti-Semitism,” said EJC President Dr. Moshe Kantor. “We are now studying the possibility that this legally constitutes incitement to hatred and even a hate crime and will require legal action if this proves to be the case.”

Polish Walkway Named After Woman Who Saved Jews From Warsaw Ghetto

Polish officials have honored Irena Sendler, a Polish woman credited with saving 2,500 Jewish children from the Holocaust, by naming a walkway in a symbolically important spot after her. 

Sendler was a social worker who smuggled Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II, when Poland was occupied by Nazi Germany. The children were placed with Christian families and in convents and given new names. Sendler died in 2008.

Nation of Islam Leader Criticized for Antisemitic Remarks in Recent Detroit Appearance

A national Jewish civil rights group has criticized Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan for making anti-Semitic statements at a Detroit church appearance and is calling on a congressman and other leaders in attendance to condemn the remarks. 

The Detroit Free Press says Farrakhan denounced "Satanic Jews" and the "synagogue of Satan" controlling major US institutions.

Former Warsaw Ghetto Insurgent Residing in Montreal Dies

Baruch Spiegel, one of the last remaining survivors of the 1943 Warsaw ghetto uprising by poorly armed Jewish insurgents against the powerful Nazi German force that occupied Poland, has died. He was 93.

Spiegel died May 9 in Montreal, where he had spent the past four years in a nursing home, his son Julius Spiegel said Tuesday.

According to the report, Holocaust denial and glorification remained troubling themes, and opposition to Israeli policy at times was used to promote or justify blatant anti-Semitism.

Muslim Clerics From Around the Globe to Visit Auschwitz

Fourteen Muslim clerics from across the globe will visit the former Nazi Auschwitz death camp in southern Poland this week as part of a Holocaust awareness and anti-genocide program, organizers said Friday.

"This is an opportunity for imams who are influential in their communities to look at the Holocaust first hand and to go to Auschwitz, to see what that kind of hatred led to," Poland's Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich told AFP.

Replica Commemorates Great Synagogue in Warsaw Destroyed by Nazis in WWII

A miniature replica of the Great Synagogue of Warsaw will be installed on the site of the original, almost 70 years to the day after the Nazis leveled it, an architect for the project said Sunday.

"The different fragments, like the walls, the domes, the court, have already been assembled for a first time. All of it will then be dismantled and transported next to the original place for final assembly scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday," architect Jan Strumillo said.

Opera Cancelled in Germany Due to Holocaust-Related Scenes

A modern production of Richard Wagner's opera "Tannhauser" has been canceled in Germany after the opening-night audience complained about new scenes showing Jews being executed and dying in the gas chambers.

A spokeswoman for Duesseldorf's opera house said Thursday there would only be concert performances without theatrical staging.

Glenn Beck Slammed by Jewish Groups for Depicting NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg Giving Nazi Salute

Glenn Beck roused the National Rifle Association's annual convention this weekend with his attacks on New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, but he also aroused criticism by a major Jewish group for depicting the mayor giving what appears to be a a Nazi salute. 

The head of the Anti-Defamation League called Becks' comments "deeply offensive on so many levels," and B'nai B'rith called for Beck to apologize.

World Jewish Congress Urges Ban on Neo-Nazi Parties

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - The World Jewish Congress urged Hungary on Tuesday to crack down on the far-right Jobbik party and called on governments in Europe to consider banning neo-Nazi parties threatening democracy and minority rights.

The WJC plenary assembly, held in the Hungarian capital rather than Jerusalem to highlight rising anti-Semitism in Hungary, passed a resolution saying Budapest must recognize that Jobbik poses "a fundamental threat to Hungary's democracy.

Alleged Auschwitz Death Camp Guard Arrested in Germany

A 93-year-old man who was deported from the US for lying about his Nazi past was arrested by German authorities Monday on allegations he served as an Auschwitz death camp guard, Stuttgart prosecutors said.

Hans Lipschis was taken into custody after authorities concluded there was "compelling evidence" he was involved in crimes at Auschwitz while there from 1941 to 1945, prosecutor Claudia Krauth said.

Hungary's prime minister told an international assembly of Jews on Sunday that his government has declared "zero tolerance" on anti-Semitism, but his speech failed to impress those gathered who said he has failed to confront the country's largest far-right party.

Addressing the opening session of the World Jewish Congress, Prime Minister Viktor Orban acknowledged that anti-Semitism was on the rise both in Europe and Hungary, attributing it partly to the economic crisis affecting the region.

Hungarian Fascist Party Holds Demonstration Against World Jewish Congress

The day before the annual gathering of the World Jewish Congress, set to open Sunday night in Budapest, a demonstration was held in the capital of Hungary by the Fascist, racist “Jobbik” party, making statements against world Jewish leaders, and against Israel. The Jobbik party is the third largest in the Hungarian parliament.

Hungarian authorities have taken large-scale measures to secure the meeting of the upcoming congress, and they had forbidden the demonstration to be held. But the courts canceled the government order, saying it would stifle the group’s freedom to demonstrate.

ATHENS—An attempt by the extremist far-right Golden Dawn party to hand out food to Greeks only in defiance of a municipal ban degenerated Thursday with the city’s mayor saying a party lawmaker tried to punch him and draw a gun. The punch missed its target, landing instead on a 12-year-old girl, Greek media said.
Security guards restrained the legislator, Giorgos Germenis, with television footage showing them marching him out of the building.

German Authorities Underestimated Strength of Far Right

A German neo-Nazi’s murder trial starting Monday over the killings of 10 people has raised uncomfortable questions about murky links that the police and the intelligence services have with the extreme right.
